Dhagpo - Fire, Rain and Unquenchable Spirit

I am back in Dhagpo Kagyu Ling - and wouldn’t you know it, I arrive at the perfect time as the annual raising of the flags and coinciding Sang Puja I have always been lucky enough to be present for is my first morning back. Our beloved Lama Jigmé Rinpoché is leading the practice, and while the little temple is nice and warm, outside it is pouring rain despite our best wishes for a roaring fire.

Even with the rain the fire somehow blazes on, the offerings are thrown in amidst a torrential downpour that cannot seem to make a dent in the happy vibes throughout the place. Afterwards we all gather, huddled together under a small tent barely large enough to cover our heads for the raising of the flags — raincoats and umbrellas out in spades as everyone scurries along with bright smiling faces, slipping off each other, trying, as best they can, to avoid getting drenched as the flags are finally raised. What could be seen as a cumbersome and arduous task becomes a hilarious and cheerful event. Dark rain clouds and fields of mud have no bearing - the unquenchable spirit pervades - we are all well versed in the rainy arts here.

I am so happy to be back here, this is, as it has been since the moment I first arrived - home. Simply put, this place is so special, and those who make it so are nothing less than family. Happy Losar once again to everyone, may all your wishes be fulfilled!!!
