Nedo Rinpoche told us today that thoughts are like waves in the ocean. When they come at us they can be scary and powerful, or beautiful, peaceful, and serene.

Dhagpo - Of Thoughts and Waves

But we attach to the idea that they are separate from the ocean, they have form, and therefor are something to cling to, to create concepts about, and, inevitably, to fear, judge or revel in. But it is only when we see them return to the vast endless ocean, that we see that they are just ocean, just thoughts, and just our mind. They come from the ocean, they return to the ocean, they are non other than the ocean itself. It is the same with thoughts, and with our mind. Thoughts are nothing but mind, and they are not to be feared. They are not to be reveled in either, in a blind effort to cling to some glossy dream or painful self accusations. They are what they are, and nothing more. Waves breaking onto more waves, in an endless cycle of thoughts returning to an endless ocean mind.
