In the presence of Karmapa and Sangyumla, he presided over the private ceremony where he cut a small piece of Thugsey’s hair and gave him his refuge name. It was such a precious moment, so tender was the affection Rinpoche showed to Thugsey. Karmapa made a Mandala offering to Rinpoche, something I’ve never seen before. So clear was the admiration and respect between these two great men, the staggering significance of these gestures cannot be denied. It was all so incredibly beautiful. My heart just melted, I must admit I cried, again. Watching Karmapa with his son, Sangyumla by his side, as gracious and regal as always. Luding Rinpoche sitting next to them, with those joyful eyes and that huge smile of his, I was completely blown away by his presence. He is quite old, relying on a wheelchair as his attendants help him with every movement, but his eyes shown clear like a diamond. His joy was so huge, as he held little Thugsey’s hands, radiating love in a display of grace and poise unlike anything I have ever seen. He was beaming, we all were. For him to make this trip was a huge deal, a great show of respect, and for us, the preciousness to see a great teacher such as he is a rare gift. In a final display of kindness he even gave a blessing to everyone in the room. I for one was deeply, deeply touched by him. By the respect and love Karmapa showed to him. For the grace and effortless elegance he showed to everyone. And how he adored little Thugsey was beyond compare, holding his little hands - it was a moment that will never leave my mind for as long as I live.
