He is not only a wonderful Father, a deeply devoted student of the Dharma, a giving and overly generous human being, but a really incredible teacher as well.
Over these past few years I rarely if ever get to see him and this has been hard on us both, trying to continue manifesting and nurturing a relationship from a vast distance, from the farthest points on earth from each other, requires a lot of patience and effort, and many sacrifices. Seeing him here under the Andalusian sun, spreading the Dharma, and taking a few well deserved days off after the amazing Dhagpo event to see each other before I head off to the EC and he goes back to the States has given us some much needed time to reconnect. A veteran student of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, and later on of Shamar Rinpoche, my Dad has been deeply invested in the Dharma for many, many years, from well before I was born. A deeply committed and devout man, he hasn’t missed a single day of practice in over thirty years. In addition to a very successful and extremely duty burdened life back home he continues to make great waves of energy and action for the Dharma, as well as being a great source of daily inspiration for me. The joy I feel watching him teach is incredible. The last time I had the pleasure I was in my teens, and since now I rarely get to see him for any extended length of time, the past few days we have spent here in Spain have been such a treasure and long overdue. In fact, we haven’t been able to spend more than one single full day together in the last few years, always catching each other for a fleeting and brief moment, passing each other in opposite directions in the skies sometimes, but always missing each other nonetheless.
I have been blessed with very unique, very dedicated and extremely loving parents. One main reason that I am still alive in this world is because of their never ending support; through the thickest of the thick, all the ups and many downs, the twists and turns I put us all through - they never left my side. We have been through so very much together. I cannot express how much I care for them, how much they mean to me, or how lucky I feel to have them in my life. I am so proud to be able to see my Dad once again teaching. I am so proud to call myself his son as he sits before us, at the feet of Buddha, expounding a wonderfully accessible talk in his unique and ever touching way. He is a gifted teacher, plenty of warm humor and wit, along with a gentle yet determined approach; I see a lot of Trungpa Rinpoche in him. I feel like I was born with a great bond - already fully developed - with both Trungpa Rinpoche’s teachings and in his physical form as well, something I must have inherited from my Dad, who knew him so much better than I ever will. Though I have had the great chance to meet other amazing teachers, I will always have a very special place in my heart for Trungpa, something we both seem to share. While I may have no memory of meeting him my connection is deeply rooted just the same.
I am so deeply grateful for what I have, to see my Dad once again, to watch him teach, to watch an entire room full of people sharing in his open heart and experiences, enjoying it as much as I am. I am so proud of him, in this moment and all others. Thank you Dad, for being such an incredible inspiration for me, on and off the field, and for never giving up on me. Like father like son, if only I could be so lucky, and if only I could dream so big.
I Love you Dad-
