Imagine the streets of Kuala Lumpur overflowing with 25,000 people, Buddhists of all races, schools, lineages and backgrounds, coming together for a candle lit walk through the city’s center forming a trail of colorful and glowing floats from dozens of Dharma centers lining the way, led at the very front by Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje himself.
It sounds unreal, but I have just witnessed it, and it was unlike anything I can even try to explain here in words. I am left speechless, staggering to comprehend the magnitude and beauty of what I have seen, what I was right in the middle of, like a raging tumultuous inferno and the most beautiful thing you can imagine combined. It was so magical I feel like I may cry. Honestly, I am so touched I cannot explain it, so I leave you with all I have left, these few images representing but a sliver of an experience that has marked me deeply to my core. This puts a whole new meaning to Dharma Family United, singing together, candles in the night, a walk of light through twelve kilometers and over four hours steadily snaking its way through Kuala Lumpur. How could there be a better way to celebrate Vesak, I am speechless once more.
A beautiful walk of light.
