He has a natural flowing humor and energy that slides between this mature, disciplined and intense monk and a smiley teenager that cannot keep a straight face despite his best intentions. At one point he was guiding a meditation to illustrate a point in his Lojong teachings, and right in the middle he just burst out laughing. A deep belly laugh, as though he just heard the funniest thing in the world. It caught everyone totally off guard. Cutting through the silence of 100 people’s deep meditation, he created a sense of space I have rarely seen a teacher possess. The informality was deeply touching, as he washed away all pretense in the room with his utter genuineness. And it continued on. People were weeping from laughter as he simply couldn’t stop. Wave after wave until he himself was covering his face with his robes, heaving with giggles. Then his head comes up, you see the focus back in his eyes, and on to the next point with striking clear determination. Gracefully walking the line between clear presence and liberating humor. This is what a true Dharma teacher is like, the one and only Jamgon Kontrul Rinpoche.
