Entering a new city can be exciting, new sights and dazzling locations, and even though we haven’t had a moment to actually see the city itself, we can take it all in later when we have a moment again to ourselves after the real work has been done.
In a high rise above the city, in a bountifully lit and abundantly bright and cheerful room Chogyal Rinpoche led a meditation teaching that ended up lasting well into the night. I tried my best to tiptoe around the myriad of meditative bodies, trying not to make a sound as if each and every little noise would echo in eternity due to the incredible quiet, calm and deep concentration going on around me. Peaceful faces staring back at me, though totally oblivious to my presence they all practiced together until the sun had long since set. There was such an amazing energy going on here, a serene tranquility - nothing but clear bright light and the occasional flash of color from the flowers or jotted blacks from the calligraphy on the walls. We may not have seen the city, but we have bonded with those who call it home, and for now that will surely do. High above the city, in a room with a dazzling view gazing at the millions down below, we have finally arrived in Shanghai.
