He said we are so focused on the grandiosity of our suffering that we actually make it grow and become more powerful. We are bothered by the most simplistic of problems. Like a tiny bit of sweat when the ac turns off, when we are happy to sweat profusely outside running around with friends. Why must we literally “sweat the small stuff”? We grieve the smallest and most insignificant of actions, making things that are temporary last far longer as we move through our lives giving such weight and finite status to them. We take our suffering and apply it to everything. Our joy becomes dampened by the impending suffering we expect, so our joy is then tainted with its expectation. We know from the four basic truths that “life is suffering” but this should be an inspiration to let go, not to hold on. We must let go of the weight and just relax in it all. Why can’t we just let the joy be joyful? If we can harness the power of living with a lightness in our hearts then we can breathe more openly. We can have more joy and naturally there is less pain and heaviness. And why can't we just let the joy be joyful ? In this room crammed full of family and friends under the bright shining lights of the new center, with a surprise visit by Sangyumla herself, I find myself asking the same question. In a world already heavy enough as it is we all need to let the joy flow as freely as possible for the benefit of all beings. Let us enjoy the good that we have in front of us and not worry about what is wrong, or what could go wrong. Let's ditch the weight of expectations, and just let the joy flow.
