Kathmandu at this hour is beautiful, the air is still fresh from the rains of the night before, the dust has settled and there is a sense of clean and calm that will be quickly whisked away in the coming day’s bustle and activity.
At the top the construction crews are already working, continuing to prepare the gompa with scaffolding to ensure its stability while they do the repairs, but today is a special day. Led by none other than Maniwa Lama Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche and Lodreu Rabsel Rimpoche a puja was held, to correctly remove the blessings from the statues inside, to hold them in a mirror to protect them, and then when everything has been repaired they can be returned to the statues once more. The doors of Karma Raja Mahavihar monastery were opened, and facing directly inside the puja was carried out. With only a few onlookers and their attendants and monks, this short puja was performed in the early light of the day, on the top of Swayambhu as the sun was coming out to greet us. With all that we’re doing I haven’t had a moment to rest, or even just sit still for a single moment, but this was one time I was really happy to have simply been there. With all that’s happening it can be comforting and reassuring to know that steps are being taken to rebuild, and that all that we have come to love and cherish about this place is being cared for. With the masters coming to prepare everything, we can all rejoice when the day finally arrives, when this magnificent place can be open once more.
