Underneath that texture of hardened vajra master lies a teddy bear like playfulness that melts your heart completely. He is so kind and gentle it’s difficult not to just want to hug him constantly. He is simply wonderful. He is the father of our great Jamgon Rinpoche. He is one of the highest and most powerful teachers we have. He can also be extremely intense. My first empowerment with him years ago in Dhagpo, he sauntered in with this usual casual flair. He got on the throne, closed his eyes, and did his preparations. When he finally opened them again, he was like a different person, evoking such power and raw energy it nearly knocked me off my feet. From this man whom I had always seen laughing and joyous comes this supreme lightning bolt - the intensity in his eyes - even his body seemed to appear bigger and more overwhelming. He was massive. He was transformed. After the empowerment he walked out with this huge smile on his face, just casually greeting people, thanking them for coming, a soft bow as he left the room. I am completely blown away to this day. He did precisely the same for our photo session; all smiles on the way in, camera on and all business. Those eyes burning a hole straight through me. We spent an hour afterwards speaking about Dharma, life in general, and he was just wonderful. Gave me all the time in the world. Rinpoche will always be this dual figure for me. The great lion, both powerful and serene, with that plush-velvet huggable quality. With his vajra lightening bolt always lurking just below the surface, ready as always to wake you up when the time comes.
