Only 22 years old and yet being in his presence is like sitting next to a Buddha of infinite experience and wisdom. He simply radiates. His laugh makes me feel like I will literally explode with joy. It takes over his body like a tidal wave, as he shakes and giggles uncontrollably. It’s truly unreal how joyous it is, this full bellied laughter that shakes the walls and contagiously spreads over everyone. Many times these giggle attacks cause him to stop what he’s doing for 10 minutes or more at a time, and then in a blink of an eye he just begins teaching again. He is so deeply genuine, kind, and easy to talk to, but it’s like he’s from another universe, where one couldn’t possibly fathom what he’s actually doing or seeing. He is so devoted and humble. He told me he had dreamed of doing a long retreat since he was 5 years old. That he is the first of the 16th Karmapa’s Heart Sons to do so. And, regardless of him being a Rinpoche or someone special, that he was in fact just an ordinary guy wanting to do a retreat because his heart desired it so.
Photographing him was one of the greatest experiences of my life. An honor, but also so much fun. He was totally animated and engaged, as our afternoon turned into night I couldn’t tell if we were ever going to stop. He was extremely patient with me, and I am so happy to have had the opportunity to capture him on the eve of his parting for retreat. Today is Lhabab Duchen, one of the most auspicious days of the year, and I just witnessed the closing of the doors ceremony as Rinpoche and 18 monks began their retreat of almost 4 years. It was profoundly powerful to be there, as they closed the doors and waved their goodbyes. I will surely miss him, we all will, but he is exactly where he needs to be.
On this most special day, at the start of their most auspicious retreat, I would like to congratulate Rinpoche and the others on their devotion and commitment. I can think of no better time to present the next installment of my Dharma Studio project; I give you, the the one and only Jamgon Kontrul Rinpoche.
