His smile radiates outwards like the sun. He is funny, generous, modern, charismatic and so much fun to be around. He reminds me a bit of a super hero, always off on some galant adventure, his playful grin and giddy exuberance in tow, as he whisks off to do something wonderful. We took a drive to his beautiful new retreat center in Namo Buddha, spending time walking the hills and seeing all the ways it has progressed since my trip there last year. With Rinpoche I always feel like I’m spending time with an extremely wise old friend. Nothing is taboo or inaccessible as we spent the whole day chatting about anything and everything, taking photos, chatting some more. He really listens, really wants to know how you’re doing, what you’re feeling, how he can help. He is just genuine, and genuine about everything. When I was 16 years old, sitting in Kathmandu for the first time, meeting him for the first time, after ten minutes he told me I could come and stay with him - anytime. He meant it. I’m sitting in his guest room right now writing this. His genuineness, kindness, generosity and endless charm haven’t wavered one single iota. He is as he always is - impeccably kind, armed with the biggest smile ever, and ready for anything. Now we just need to find him a red cape.
